more mattresses from the streets of north west Mattressland.  someone just pointed out (via facebook) that most of the mattresses seems to be the checkered blue type.  i thought...hmmm...this certainly needs further investigation.

do you think i could get a research grant to look at when and why we moved away from the old skool stripe to the checkered mattress?

i suspect it was because a striped mattress reminds us of prison (see Porridge et al) or poverty (see Depression era America with meagre earnings stuffed into mattresses).
whereas the checkered pattern denotes fast cars (checkered flag), the frivolity of games (checkers, draughts, snakes & ladders etc) and of course...is often associated with the Ska music genre.
