Nothing like a trip to the seaside to blow the cobwebs and recharge the batteries.
Spent a beautiful day strolling along the beach and harbour at Whitstable and sampling some superb sea-food. Whitstable is famous for it's oysters and i couldn't help but be reminded (in a guilty-pleasures kind of way) of Lewis Carroll's The Walrus and The Carpenter.....
"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"
The Walrus did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:"
and those adventurous little oysters were lured....it was bound to end in tears....
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one."
I highly recommend the Whitstable Fish Market where i tasted some delish clams a la creme....slurrrp....for which no little oysters were harmed...can't say the same for the clams!
Off in the distance you can just spot those fabulous concrete constructions...the Maunsell Sea Forts...
These amazing structures have had many incarnations - they were built during the Second World War and designed for anti-aircraft defense, they were occupied by various pirate radio broadcasters in the late 60s as their size and location made them ideal antenna platforms and more recently The Prodigy launched their new album with publicity/video footage that was filmed extensively at Redsands Towers. For more photos and news about the preservation and restoration of the forts - check out the Redsands Project at www.project-redsand.com/
Must take a little boat trip out there to have a proper butchers at them up-close-and-personal-like - maybe when the weather's a little warmer....only gulls + hardy fishermen brave the beautiful briny sea in the winter months....
